Pre-Start Walkaround: Your Daily Safety Check

Machinery Daily Safety Check

Before you turn the key to start your workday, a careful walkaround is your first line of defense against downtime, damage, and injury. This quick visual and tactile check helps you catch leaks, loose hardware, debris buildup, and early signs of wear long before they become costly failures. Clean sightlines, secure connections, and a tidy machine bay also make it easier to spot small changes from one shift to the next. Use the checklist below to keep your machine reliable, the job on schedule, and everyone on site safer.

Leaks & Loose Parts - Look for oil, fuel, or coolant leaks. Check for loose bolts, nuts, or damaged hoses.

Combustibles & Dirt - Remove any dirt, leaves, twigs, or other flammable materials from hot areas like the engine, DPF, turbocharger, and radiator.

Battery Area - Clean around the battery and remove any debris.

Noise & Smell - If you hear strange noises or smell something unusual, stop the machine immediately and report it.

Hydraulic System - Check cylinders, linkages, hoses, and hydraulic tank for wear, damage, or leaks.

Fuel System - Inspect fuel lines and hoses for leaks or damage.

Electrical Connections - Ensure connectors and wiring harnesses are secure and free of play.

Mirrors & Camera - Clean and adjust rearview mirrors and check the rearview camera for defects.

Undercarriage - Inspect tracks, sprockets, idlers, guards, and rollers for wear, loose bolts, or oil leaks.

Handrails & Steps - Check for damage or loose bolts and repair as needed.

Cab Interior - Inspect gauges, monitors, and seat belt hardware. Clean and replace any damaged parts.

If something looks off, even slightly, treat it as a stop signal. Document what you found, notify our Service Team right away, and get repairs handled before operating. A few extra minutes now can prevent hours of downtime, protect equipment warranties, and keep people out of harm’s way. Consistent walkarounds build a strong safety culture and extend the life of the machine.
